Nirvana veröffentlicht am 10. September 1991 mit „Smells Like Teen Spirit“ die erste Singleauskopplung aus dem Album Nevermind. Der Song wird zur Hymne einer Generation und begründet den Siegeszug des Grunge.

Knapp zwei Jahre davor am 9. November 1989 zog es etwa einhundert Grunge-Fans ins Musiktheater Bad in Herrenhausen. Hier fand das einzige Konzert, der damals noch eher unbekannten Newcomer-Band aus Seattle statt. Auf der ersten Europatournee stellten Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic und der damalige Drummer Chad Channing ihr Debütalbum „Bleach“ vor. Knapp 50 Minuten dauerte der GIG. Auf der Setlist des Konzerts stand auch „Polly“, ein von Kurt Cobain geschriebener Akustiksong, der es nicht aufs Debütalbum geschafft hatte. Das Stück passe nicht zum Konzept des Albums, so Cobain. Der Song fand sich dann zwei Jahre später auf der zweiten LP „Nevermind“ wieder.

Es sollte das einzige Konzert bleiben, das Nirvana in Hannover jemals geben sollte.
